Boys Basketball:

With the exception of those inside the San Dimas locker room, Friday’s CIF-SS Division 3A semifinal showdown began the way many thought it would.

The high-scoring visitors from Norte Vista got out to an early 10-0 lead at SDHS.

Jeremy Ketterling called a timeout, gave his boys some reassurance, and they responded.

San Dimas took its first lead late in the first half, and they went on to claim a 74-65 victory over the Braves.

SDHS went on a 41-30 run between the second and third periods.

They had a 10-6 advantage in 3-pointers, and five of their six scorers finished in double digits, as opposed to just two for Norte Vista.

San Dimas held NVHS to 19 points under their scoring average.

And the Saints went 8-of-11 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to hold off the Braves.

It’s for all of the above that San Dimas will make its first trip to the CIF finals since 1999.

Andrew Diep had an outstanding game in leading the SDHS offense.

Diep finished with 17 points and 10 assists.

And that included four 3-pointers, and a 3-of-4 effort from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Diep showed off his stamina in playing all 32 minutes at a high level.

Nathan Yearout, the Saints leading scorer in the postseason, had zero points at they headed to the break.

However, Yearout connected on four 3’s in the third quarter, and he finished with 17 points of his own.

He scored five points in the fourth period, including three free-throws in four attempts.

San Dimas sophomore Jeremiah Garzon provided 16 points in the win, and eight of those came in SDHS’ 23-16 third-quarter run.

Angelo Fares, who scored a total of six points in postseason wins over Calvary Chapel Santa Ana, Esperanza and Providence, chipped in with 11 big points on Friday.

But that was just half of his contribution on Friday as you’ll read later in the story.

And Luke Chavez added 10 points, including six in the fourth quarter.

Hugo Morales scored 18 of his game-high 25 points in the second half for NVHS.

Bryan Ramirez hit five of the Braves’ six 3-pointers, and he finished with 22 points.

Coach Ketterling credited Angelo Fares with slowing down Carter Fulton.

Fulton scored 43 in Tuesday’s OT victory at Quartz Hill, and he averaged 30 points per game in the postseason.

On Friday, though, the NVHS sophomore managed just 13 points.

Up next: The Saints will travel to Aquinas next weekend at AHS for the D-3A championship.

The Falcons (17-16) dominated Keppel, 62-38, in their semifinal round showdown in San Bernardino.

CIF-SS will announce on Saturday if the game will be played next Friday or Saturday.

Quotable:

SDHS coach, Jeremy Ketterling: “Our coaches put together a great game plan. After they got out to that early 10-0 lead, we focused on slowing their offense down and making them play our game. I was proud of all of our guys, and we made a real effort to put bodies against their scorers.”

SDHS senior, Nathan Yearout: “It was a great team effort, everybody made big plays throughout the game. Angelo and Andrew were hot in the first half, and Luke and Jeremiah were huge on defense and on the boards. I got hot with 3’s in the second half, so it was a great overall team win.”

SDHS senior, Luke Chavez: “The key to beating a team that averages more points than us was to keep them out of the paint as much as we could and to limit offensive rebounds on their side. I think my part tonight was to give it my all on defense and distribute the ball since it wasn’t my scoring night. I think Nathan stepped up by hitting multiple threes in a row and giving us momentum and a lead.”

SDHS junior, Andrew Diep: “I think the most important thing to our victory was our ability to stay calm and collected when they went on runs. We started the game down 10-0, and we were able to come back, and it was only a 2-point deficit at the end of the first quarter. They went on many big runs, but we stayed composed. I think the person that truly stepped up the most was Coach Galloway. He truly hasn’t gotten enough credit for everything he’s done the entire season. All of our great defensive games are because of his game plans. He spends countless hours watching film to help us, and this win wasn’t possible without him.”

SDHS sophomore, Jeremiah Garzon: “I feel like the key to beating this team was to not let their ‘guys’ beat us, and force their role players to facilitate and score the ball, which was executed really well by our team, especially Angelo Fares. He kept their leading scorer below his average points per game, which contributed a lot of help towards the win. My role today was to make sure not to let their rebounder grab rebounds and to score when the right opportunity was given.”
