Boys Basketball:
San Dimas showed off its resolve and mettle in Tuesday’s 65-64 victory in overtime at Providence in the quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 3A playoffs.
The Saints withstood a barrage of PHS 3-pointers to earn a home game in Friday’s semifinal round showdown with Norte Vista.
In all, Providence had a 16-10 (or 18-point) advantage in 3-pointers, including nine in the first half.
However, Nathan Yearout made sure this wasn’t his final high school basketball game.
Yearout had game highs in points (28) and 3-pointers (6).
Yearout had at least one 3-pointer in the first, second, third and overtime periods.
And he scored five of the Saints’ seven points in OT.
Trailing 64-63, and with less than 10 seconds to play in the extra period, one of the area’s best point guards, Andrew Diep, found Luke Chavez for what turned out to be the game-winning points.
Chavez finished with 12 points, including a pair of 3’s.
Chavez also hit a half-court shot just before the buzzer at the end of the third quarter to give SDHS a 45-42 lead.
Diep added 10 big points and nine assists.
Jeremiah Garzon chipped in with 12 points and hit a 3-pointer in the second quarter.
Elijah Orjuela led the Pioneers with 15 points.
Each of those 15 points came from beyond the 3-point arc.
Griffin Berschneider and Riley Murphy contributed 13 points apiece in the loss.

Quotable:
SDHS coach, Jeremy Ketterling: “It was just a really great game. Providence played really well. They came out on fire and hit nine 3-pointers in the first half. But our kids kept battling and stuck to our game plan. Eventually, we took the lead at the end of the third period. Nathan Yearout was great tonight, and he kept hitting shots to keep us in the game. It was a great team effort. Andrew Diep did what he does, and he led the team. He handled the pressure well, distributed the ball and made a couple of big shots.”
SDHS senior, Luke Chavez: “I think the key to victory tonight was contesting all shots and really buying in on defense. They came out really hot, but we kept to the game plan and fought back. I think my role in the first half was to play good defense and rebound since I wasn’t getting any good looks. In the second half, I think I became more of a scoring option, and I got more involved on defense, but continued to play defense and rebound.”
SDHS junior, Andrew Diep: “I thought it was a great effort by the group to not crumble under adversity, because it felt like they hit 100 3-pointers. But we were able to keep it close the whole way, and we were able to grind out a tough win. I think we were able to get good looks on offense for everyone, and I think I did a great job today of setting up our scorers for easy buckets. I made sure to keep hitting Nathan on skip passes for all those 3’s that he made, and I was able to get the ball to Jeremiah for easy layups.”
