Boys Basketball:

Glendora survived a massive challenge from a talented and well-coached Walnut program on Thursday night.

GHS didn’t take its first lead of the game until the final minute in regulation.

And it took overtime to defeat the Mustangs, 71-66, in a showdown of the Palomares League’s top two teams.

Glendora has now won 18 consecutive games.

That is a program best since 1992.

There were five or six occasions where the Tartans got to within two or three points of Walnut in the second half.

But to their credit, the Mustangs continued to answer back until the waning moments.

Colton Gray had seven points at the half, and they all came from the free-throw line.

The Tartans’ leading scorer in 2024-25, however, finished with a game-high 28 points, and that included a 13-of-16 effort from the charity stripe.

Gray also had 14 rebounds, three assists and he drew a pair of charges.

Max Hilgenfeldt was a game changer for GHS.

Hilgenfeldt scored 13 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

That included two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and one in OT.

The following basket gave GHS a 71-66 lead with 20 seconds to play in the extra period,

Vince Montalbo kept the Tartans in the game early with three big 3’s.

Montalbo finished with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Walnut had an 11-6 advantage from beyond the 3-point line.

Kiko Guevara hit a game-high five 3-pointers, and he led WHS with 17 points.

Myles Wainwright chipped in with 15 points, and Nathan Ye had 11, including a pair of 3’s.

Isaiah Leon finished with eight points, but the Mustangs’ big man got in foul trouble relatively early in the second half, and that allowed Glendora to control the boards.

GHS freshman CJ Murray hit a big 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to pull the Tartans even, and the son of Cameron and nephew of Tracy Murray held his own on the defensive end while nursing a bloody nose.

Murray has stepped his game up in league play, and he’s been especially clutch from the free-throw line.

Tanner Grable scored nine big points, and he was credited by his teammates and Coach Gordon Hamlow as having a big impact on the defensive end of the court, including seven rebounds.
