Boys Basketball:
After four consecutive wins to start the 2024-25 season, Damien fell to La Mirada, 53-46, in the championship game of the Sunny Hills Tournament.
The Spartans got off to an unusually slow start.
The Matadores led 18-5 after eight minutes.
But DHS would go on a 20-7 second-quarter run, and the game was tied at 25-25 at the break.
La Mirada’s 15-9 run in the fourth period ended up being the difference.
LMHS had a 7-1 advantage in 3-pointers.
Gene Roebuck scored nine of his team-high 22 points in the decisive fourth quarter, including two of his three 3-pointers in the final eight minutes.
Julien Gomez chipped in with 10 points, and MJ Smith and King Riley scored eight points apiece in the win.
Nate Garcia scored a game-high 25 points for the Spartans.
Eli Garner finished with 11 points, and Jayden Avina provided eight points in the loss.
Up next: The Spartans will host Village Christian on November 30th at noon.
