Football:
With a loss at Los Altos in Friday’s regular season finale, South Hills would have dropped the final three games on its schedule for the sixth consecutive year.
The Huskies entered week-10 having lost a pair of Hacienda League games to Chino (21-14) and Covina (40-35).
For the record, those two close losses came to the eventual league co-champs.
But back to Friday.
Jacob Calderon, his staff and their players were insistent that SHHS would close strong.
And they did just that.
South Hills jumped on Los Altos for a 26-0 first-quarter lead, and they would leave Hacienda Heights with a 38-21 victory.
Their five wins (5-5) is the most since 2019, and they earned the league’s No. 3 seed.
Anthony Gonzales had a monster game.
Gonzales carried the ball 325 yards on 32 carries.
And that included four TDs.
Gonzales actually totaled 233 more rushing yards than LAHS had as a team.
Messiah Luter gained 54 yards on eight carries, which included one score.
Tyler Arguinzoni carried the ball 11 times for 48 yards.
Fabian Marez scored on a 2-yard TD run.
Jayden Arnold led South Hills with 11 tackles, while Luter had nine and Josh Lizaola tallied seven tackles.
Jayden Arnold (2), Ivan Lopez (1.5) and Gavin Martinez (1) combined for 4.5 sacks, and Luter picked a pair of passes.
Diego Castillo completed 20-of-32 for LAHS for 230 yards.
He tossed three TD passes and one interception.
Francisco De Moss attempted one pass, and it was picked by Luter.
Giovanni Gaeta caught 10 passes for 110 yards and two scores.
Nick Castillo (19), Gaeta (14) and Noel Trejo-Zepeda (13) led the Conquerors defense with a combined 46 tackles.
