Football:

For most of the 2024 season, if one spent any time at all on social media, it was out there for all to see.

“Bonita is soft,” and “they haven’t played anyone,” being the two most prevalent talking points.

With a record of 8-0 as they entered Friday night, the boys from La Verne traveled to Charter Oak (7-1, 3-0) to battle a very talented, athletic and well-coached Chargers’ program.

Calpreps, the site that CIF-SS uses (rankings) to formulate their first-round playoff pairings projected that Bonita had approximately a 35-percent likelihood of leaving Covina with a win.

Someone must have forgotten to tell the Bearcats they didn’t have much of a chance physically or analytically, because they dropped a 49-21 Sierra League beatdown on COHS.

Bonita took a 28-0 lead in the second quarter.

And the closest Charter Oak was able to get was 35-14 after Marquis Bradley intercepted a pass and brought it back 25 yards to paydirt.

Bonita has won two consecutive games against the Chargers and four of their last five.

As big as Friday’s convincing victory was, BHS still has a slightly uphill climb to secure an outright Sierra League title.

In the final week of the regular season, they travel to Colony.

The Titans (3-1) only league setback was an 18-14 loss at COHS last week.

But back to Friday.

BHS and COHS had a number of athletes that shined last night.

However, a persuasive argument could be made that Bonita sophomore Joseph Lara was the game’s MVP.

Lara rushed for 177 yards on 23 carries, both of which are career highs.

Lara caught three passes for 15 yards.

He had a 49-yard TD run, and a 40-yard pick-six.

Bonita had a 221-1 advantage in net rushing yards, and that allowed them to win the time of possession battle, which forced a very solid quarterback in Corin Berry to spend far more time on the west sideline than he would have liked.

Travis Lippert completed 8-of-11 for 197 yards.

Lippert hit Dylan Robinson on a 75-yard TD pass to open the scoring.

He would go on to toss 54-and-34-yard TD passes to Cole Parra and Noah Mikhail, respectively.

Lippert was also responsible for Bradley’s pick-six.

Parra also had a 5-yard TD run for the Bearcats, and Mikhail scored on a 3-yard TD run.

Berry completed 17-of-26 for 225 yards, including a 6-yard TD pass to Bradley.

Berry also scored on a 1-yard run.

Bradley finished with 99 receiving yards on seven catches.

Antonio Reasby had seven receptions of his own for a game-high 108 receiving yards.

The Chargers close out their regular season schedule with a Friday night showdown with Glendora at Citrus College.

Quotable:

Bonita sophomore, Joseph Lara: “This was definitely the biggest game of my career. I am so happy to have done my part in such a big win. But I have to credit all my teammates and coaches, and I’m especially thankful of my offensive line. We knew there was a lot of talk about us being soft, but instead of getting caught up in that, we worked hard at practice, stayed focused, and we picked up a huge win for the program.”
