Girls Tennis:
Thanks to Maranatha Tennis for this report:
In the final match of the regular season, the Lady Minutemen faced reigning league champions, Valley Christian.
In their last meeting, the Defenders won, 11-6, despite being short their #2 singles player, with the final set knotted up at 5-5.
Today’s match featured the full Defenders lineup.
Maranatha players knew their chances at winning this match were not high, but they approached the match with the desire to try.
The match started off rocky for the Lady Minutemen, with four courts simultaneously at 0-3.
Things did not look promising.
While doubles did indeed continue that trend, each team losing 0-6, #1 singles Grace Yang ought back, playing smarter tennis, to take a 4-3 lead.
In a set that lasted over an hour, Yang finally prevailed, 6-4.
#2 Mia Sun followed that with a 6-4 win as well, leaving #3 Kathryn Khalil with the opportunity to tie the overall match at 3-3.
With a 5-4 lead, it looked like it could happen.
Her opponent eked out the next three hard-fought games, however, giving the Defenders a 4-2 lead.
In the second round, #1 Mia Huang/Diana Sarksyan prevailed, 7-5, while Yang continued her hot hand, winning 6-2.
The overall score was 8-4 at this point.
Looking to rally, the Lady Minutemen posted three wins, with Yang and Su each winning, 6-0 and 6-4, and #2 Madison White/Jennifer Chu edging their opponents, 7-5.
Maranatha almost logged their fourth win of the round, with Huang/Sarksyan leading 5-2, before losing the next five games and falling, 5-7, despite having a match point in hand.
With the regular season concluding, the Lady Minutemen (9-5; 2-4) continue to improve and are now playing their best tennis of the season.
They hope to continue their season by receiving an at-large bid to the CIF-SS playoffs.
Whether they receive the bid or not won’t be known until next weekend, after the Olympic League Individuals Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday.
