Football:

South Hills could easily be 2-5.

But Jacob Calderon’s Huskies have displayed their hearts and toughness.

And that especially includes week six and seven of the 2024 football season.

Six days ago, SHHS trailed 21-0 at Diamond Bar in the Hacienda League opener for both programs.

South Hills scored with 3:24 to play on Tyler Anguinzoni’s 22-yard TD run and Brianna Castruita’s extra-point attempt.

On the other side of the ball, the Huskies defense thwarted a late Brahmas charge for a 30-29 victory.

That gets us to Thursday night.

Again, South Hills found themselves in a late deficit.

They trailed Walnut 16-6 in the fourth quarter.

But SHHS outscored WHS 14-0 in the fourth, and they went on to secure a 20-16 victory.

After two Hacienda League wins in consecutive weeks, South Hills and Covina stand atop the league standings.

Arguinzoni had another big night with 113 yards on 18 carries.

Anguinzoni scored his 23-yard TD on the Huskies opening drive.

Anthony Gonzalez was the workhorse, carrying the ball 25 times for 202 yards.

Messiah Luter gained 44 yards on just three carries, and his 5-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter turned out to be the game-winning points.

He also had one reception for 12 yards.

Fabian Marez did not have a big statistical game to say the least.

But Marez had a crucial quarterback keeper early in the fourth to keep the Huskies in the game.

Freshman Troy Sibolboro put the game on ice with an interception on Walnut’s final drive of the game.

Up next: The Huskies will battle Chino next Thursday at Covina District Field.
