The Covina offense continues to do the heavy lifting in the Colts success.
On Thursday, CHS outlasted their host from Diamond Bar, 49-32, in a Hacienda League shootout.
Covina’s offense averages 40 points per game, and they’ve played a large role in the Colts improving to 6-1 overall, and 2-0 in league.
Their record-breaking quarterback, Jake Duronslet, threw TD passes 85, 86, 87, 88 and 89 on Thursday.
Duronslet connected with Matthew Olivas on TD passes of 4 and 35 yards.
He also hooked up with Gatsbee Gumban, Hines Soto and Devean Urrea on scoring strikes of 40, 24 and 3 yards, respectively.
Duronslet was an efficient 17-of-21 for 212 yards, the five TD’s and one interception.
Covina never trailed and Diamond Bar got as close as 35-26.
But after the Brahmas scored, a rarity happened.
Gumban received the ensuing kickoff and fumbled the ball.
Thankfully, his teammate, Seth Devers recovered the fumble, and he sprinted 70-plus yards into the north end zone to extend the CHS advantage to 42-26.
Gumban did more than his share in the win.
The CHS sophomore got his first start in place of a suspended Kwame Parrish, and he made the most of it.
Along with his 40-yard TD reception to open the scoring, Gumban closed out the Colts night with a 93-yard TD run.
Gumban ran for nearly 230 yards on Thursday.
Olivas totaled five catches for 80 yards and the two scores.
For the record, Diamond Bar is so much better than their 0-7 record would indicate.
Quinton Mendoza had TD passes of 7 and 45 yards.
And the Brahmas quarterback scored on a 1-yard run.
Dominic Tortorelli had a 10-yard TD run for DBHS and Matthew Galvan punched it in late from one yard out.
Up next: The Colts will meet up with Walnut next Friday at Covina District Field.
The Mustangs (4-3, 0-2) dropped a 20-16 decision on Thursday night to their visitors from South Hills.
