Football:
South Hills hoped to create some momentum for the second half of the season by opening Hacienda League play with a victory at winless Diamond Bar.
However, things did not look good.
The Huskies trailed the Brahmas, 21-0, after the first 12 minutes.
SHHS showed its mettle, and they went on to claim a 30-29 victory.
Tyler Arguinzoni’s 22-yard TD run with 3:24 to play tied the game at 29-29.
But it was female kicker, Brianna Castruita’s extra-point conversion that accounted for the winning point.
With 1:11 to play, Diamond Bar drove to the South Hills 40-yard line.
And on fourth-and-short, the Huskies defense took over on downs after stopping Quinton Mendoza just shy of the first-down marker.
Fabian Marez only attempted four passes, and he completed 2-of-4 for just 13 yards.
Marez did have a rushing TD in the win.
But the SHHS ground game had two running backs that combined for 346 of the Huskies 384 rushing yards.
Danny Resendiz had a game-high 197 yards on 27 carries.
Tyler Anguinzoni gained 149 yards on the ground on 26 carries.
And that included three TD runs.
A Gonzales chipped in with 31 rushing yards on six carries.
Ivan Lopez led the SHHS defense with 10 tackles.
Gregory Garcia contributed seven tackles, and Jayden Arnold and Enrique Vizcarra had six tackles apiece.
