Rio Hondo Prep Controls King’s Academy, 24-0, in Sunnyvale; Kares Out-Rushed Knights, 250-18, & Improved to 6-1

Rio Hondo Prep rebounded nicely from last week’s lone loss of the season (28-21 at Torrance).

And they did it some 362 miles from home.

The Kares shut out their hosts from King’s Academy, 24-0, in Sunnyvale.

RHP had advantages in first downs (18-9), total offense (333-138), rushing (250-18) and defensive sacks (3-0).

Noah Penunuri scored on a 5-yard run at the 7:27 mark of the first quarter.

Yanick Diaz gave the Kares a 14-0 lead with his 39-yard TD pass to Nathaniel Shine.

With just under four minutes to play in the third quarter, Caeden Holcomb rumbled into the end zone from one yard out.

Marco Chan booted a 24-yard field goal with one second to play to close out the RHP scoring.

Penunuri out-rushed King’s Academy by himself, 104-33.

Holcomb got 12 carries and finished with 56 yards.

Braeden Yokoyama gained 37 yards on nine carries.

Elias Har carried the ball six times for 32 yards, and Shine totaled 21 rushing yards on five carries.

Diaz completed 4-of-10 for 83 yards and the TD to Shine.

Shine had two receptions for 43 yards, and Har caught one pass for 33 yards.

Penunuri had a seven-yard catch.

Elijah Gavia led RHP with four tackles, including a pair of sacks, while Calogero Chico and Har had three apiece.

Shine registered a sack as well.

Up next: The Kares have next week off, and then they’ll host Viewpoint on October 18th in the Gold Coast League opener.

But before heading home, the RHP players and coaches will attend the Miami of Florida at Cal game at 7:30 to see former Kares’ two-way stud Ryan McCulloch play linebacker for the Bears.

The game airs tonight at 7:30 on ESPN.
