Football:
What a way to open Hacienda League play.
Covina trailed Los Altos, 18-17, with 16 seconds to play.
And their record-breaking quarterback, Jake Duronslet, sprinted into the end zone from 10 yards out.
After a failed 2-point attempt, Los Altos would receive the kickoff with a six-point deficit.
There wasn’t enough time for LAHS to have a real shot of stunning the Colts in the final seconds, right?
Well, they returned the kickoff all the way to the CHS 20-yard line.
The Conquerors dialed up a screen pass that got as close as the 6-yard line.
However, several Covina defenders thwarted any chances of a Los Altos miracle, tackled the receiver and the clock bled dry.
CHS improved to 5-1.
Kwame Parrish’s 23-yard run in the first quarter gave the Colts their first lead of the game at 10-8.
Aiden Spencer had already booted a 23-yard field goal to cut the Los Altos advantage to 8-3.
Duronslet’s 9-yard TD run in the fourth quarter extended Covina’s lead to 17-8.
But to their credit, the Conquerors fought back again.
Diego Castillo and Gianni Gaeta hooked up on a second TD.
This time it was from 18 yards out.
LAHS’ Robert Gomez booted a 25-yard field goal, and they recaptured the lead at 18-17.
Duronslet, however, wouldn’t let his boys down, and his final run of the game turned out to be the difference.
