Football:

A few weeks ago, Glendora was 1-2 and they had been outscored 53-13 in losses to Chino Hills and Northview.

And the offense wasn’t firing on all cylinders.

Fast forward 20 days, and the Tartans find themselves 3-2, and they’re on the plus-side of a 118-97 point differential through the first five games of the 2024 season.

Last Friday, GHS controlled Ayala, 29-14, in Chino Hills.

And tonight, Anthony Fiorenza, gave the Tartans an early shot in the arm.

Just 89 seconds in, Fiorenza picked off a Chase Curren pass, and he turned it into a 23-yard pick-six.

Glendora cruised to a 30-7 victory at Crespi.

Tim Johnson had a big day for Glendora.

Johnson caught seven passes for 123 yards, including a pair of TD receptions.

The GHS senior also scored on a 16-yard TD run.

Five minutes after Fiorenza’s pick-six, Johnson caught a 36-yard TD pass from freshman Sebastian Lawrence to extend the lead to 14-0.

With 10:06 remaining in the half, the Celts pulled to within 14-7, when Curren hooked up with Cooper Howard on a 54-yard scoring strike.

Johnson’s 16-yard TD run gave GHS a 21-7 lead at the half.

And with 6:32 to play in the third, Lawrence and Johnson put the game on ice with a 19-yard scoring connection.

Grady Lindenmayer sacked Curren late in the fourth quarter, and the ball went out of the end zone for a safety.

Lawrence finished 9 of 14 for 135 yards and the two TD’s.

Melkon Mouradian had 13 carries for 89 yards.

Nazir McGlothen gained 50 yards on 10 carries, and he picked a pass on defense.

Austin Coronado had four sacks for the Glendora defense, and his little brother, Brandon Coronado picked a Celts’ pass.

Johnny Pina forced a fumble and Marko Luera had a fumble recovery in Friday’s win.

Lindenmayer also had a fumble recovery to go with his sack and forced fumble that cost Crespi two points.

Up next: GHS will meet up with undefeated Bonita in Friday’s Sierra League opener at Citrus College.

The Bearcats (5-0) had a week-five bye.

Quotable:

Glendora senior, Tim Johnson: “Anthony’s pick-six was amazing and gave us a lot of energy. It felt great to do my part. It showed other teams what we can do, and I was able to show what I’m capable of doing as well. Sebastian and I have great chemistry and he’s really starting to figure this out and getting comfortable at quarterback. Our defense is really playing well, and we had so many guys making contributions tonight. We really wanted to head into league with momentum, and we have that. We also know we’ll need to play our best football to beat Bonita next Friday.”
