Covina had to wait two long weeks to get back on the field after a September 13th blowout loss to unbeaten Northview at Covina District Field.
After a week-four bye, the Colts faced off with Santa Fe on Friday night at Pioneer High School in Whittier.
Covina left town with a 42-28 nonleague victory, but the Chiefs made CHS earn it.
There were a number of standouts, but Gatsbee Gumban made arguably the game-changing play of the night.
With the Colts and Chiefs tied at 14-14, Gumban took the second-half kickoff 86 yards into the end zone for a 21-14 lead, and it set his teammates off on the visiting sideline.
Covina used that momentum and outscored Santa Fe, 21-7, in the third quarter, and CHS never trailed in the second half.
Jake Duronslet was effective with his right arm and legs.
Duronslet accounted for 173 yards of total offense.
Covina’s all-time leading passer hit Matthew Olivas on a pair of 7-yard TD passes.
JD also scored on a 5-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Kwame Parrish continues to impress.
In just his first full season as the starting varsity running back, Parrish has put the CHS ground game on his shoulders.
Better yet, he deflects the credit to his offensive line and quarterback.
But on Friday, Parrish had TD runs of 3 and 18 yards, and he finished with 157 rushing yards.
Through the first five games, Parrish has north of 930 yards and eight rushing TD’s.
In the loss, Santa Fe’s Devin Clark had the most impressive stats of the night.
Clark rushed for 230 yards and four scores.
Up next: The Colts host Los Altos next Friday at 7 in the Hacienda League opener for both programs.
The Conquerors (3-2) defeated Cal High, 41-26, on Thursday evening in Hacienda Heights.
