Football:
After a disappointing week-two loss to Mt. San Jacinto (21-16), the Citrus College football team was anxious to get back on the field.
And the Owls put a 48-13 beatdown on their visitors from Grossmont College.
Citrus scored the first 28 points of the game, and the Griffins never had a chance.
The Owls had a 518-280 advantage in total offense, and that included a 355-132 edge in rushing yards.
Jamahl Wilson had a monster day for the Citrus offense, and the Oregon native made school history in the second quarter.
Leading 14-0, Tobin O’Dell handed Wilson the ball at the Owls’ 2-yard line, and he sprinted 98 yards into the east end zone.
It’s been officially labeled as the longest TD run in school history.
Wilson carried the ball nine times for 173 yards, and that included a 4-yard TD run early in the second quarter.
Wilson also caught two passes for 63 yards, one of which went for a 52-yard TD from O’Dell.
Hakim Haliburton had TD runs of 20 and 11 yards, and he finished with 67 yards on six carries.
O’Dell completed 7-of-18 for 138 yards.
O’Dell hooked up with Brayden Austin on a 40-yard TD pass, and he carried the ball three times for 68 yards.
Sean Persson had four receptions for 43 yards, including an 11-yard scoring strike from Koy Riggin.
The Citrus ‘D’ made life miserable for a pair of Griffins’ quarterbacks.
Matt Barton (7-of-24 for 83 yards & one INT) and Jaden Green (6-of-19 for 65 yards) combined to complete just 13 of 43 for 64 yards, no TD’s and one interception.
Green had a 4-yard TD run in the second quarter to pull Grossmont to within 28-7 of the Owls.
And with 5:32 to play in the game, Barton scored on a 7-yard run.
Isaiah Pressley carried the ball 15 times for 69 yards for the Griffins.
B’Andre White (four receptions for 64 yards) and Jahiem Allen (four catches for 57 yards) led the Grossmont receiving corps.
Dominic Avelar led the Owls defense with five tackles, while Kyle Ferm, Jaylen Mooring and Hunter Corbin had four tackles apiece.
Former Bonita two-way starter, Ryder Cadam, picked his first college pass on Saturday.
Dominic Rausch had two sacks for the Owls defense.
Up next: Citrus travels to Mt. SAC next Saturday at 6 to face the No. 2 ranked program in the state.
The Mounties (3-0) secured a 41-19 victory at Allan Hancock.
