Football:
Since taking over the reins at Bonita in 2018, four-time CIF-SS champion coach Steve Bogan remains undefeated against Mark Holman and his San Dimas football program in the annual Smudge Pot rivalry game.
Bogan and the Bearcats are 6-0 against SDHS after Friday’s 47-7 beatdown of the Saints at Citrus College.
In those six wins, Bonita has outscored San Dimas, 187-73.
There was no game in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic that shut our world down.
But back to Friday.
BHS made a statement early as to what kind of night it would be.
After a defensive stop, and on their first offensive play, Travis Lippert, who, in this writer’s view is the most underrated quarterback in the SGV, found Dylan Robinson on a 75-yard TD pass.
It was just a sign of things to come for Lippert, who threw for north of 325 yards, including five scores.
Nearly three minutes into the second quarter, and trailing 14-0, San Dimas got its lone score of the night, when Brandon Meredith hit Jeremiah Gibson Fernandez on a 46-yard TD pass.
The Bearcats went on a 33-0 run to close out their sixth consecutive victory over the Saints.
Robinson continues to be arguably the most dominant player of the field.
He caught six passes for 210 yards, including a pair of 75-yard TD receptions, and Robinson recovered a fumble on defense.
Cole Parra had a 5-yard TD run and an 18-yard TD reception.
One of the more creative plays of the night came when sophomore Joseph Lara got the snap, he pitched the ball to Lippert and ran along the visiting sidelines.
Lara would be rewarded with a TD pass from Lippert that covered 13 yards.
Lippert’s fifth and final TD pass of the night was an 11-yard strike to Jacob Gill.
Lippert has run the Bonita offense with an efficiency that all programs desire.
Through the first four games, the junior signal caller has tossed 13 TD’s and just one interception.
Noah Mikhail finally got a little action on offense and the Texas A&M commit scored on a six-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Up next: The Saints travel to Sunny Hills next Friday at 7.
The Bearcats head to Fontana on Friday to face a winless Kaiser program.
The Cats (0-4) have fallen to Leuzinger, King, Paloma Valley and Claremont by a combined margin of 191-18.
