Football:

For the first time all season, the Rio Hondo Prep football program trailed in a game.

Marquez quarterback Jason Gutierrez connected with Elyjah Staples on an 85-yard TD pass to give the Gladiators a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter.

Fear not, my friends.

RHP would regain the lead 79 seconds later, and they cruised to a 53-19 victory in Huntington Park.

The Kares had a 436-147 advantage in total offense, and that included a massive 325-29 edge in rushing yards.

Noah Penunuri rushed for 116 yards on six carries, and he caught two passes for 68 yards.

Penunuri had TD runs of 10 and 48 yards, and a 24-yard TD catch from Yanick Diaz with one minute to play in the first half.

It gave RHP a 42-13 lead.

Penunuri caught a pair of passes for 68 yards.

Diaz went 5-of-6 for 111 yards and two scores.

Nate Curtis and Diaz hooked up on a 7-yard TD.

Amir Hoyt picked off a Diaz pass at the 5:54 mark of the second quarter, and he brought it back for a 34-yard pick-six to pull the Gladiators to within 26-13.

Curtis finished with 38 yards rushing on five carries, and three catches for 43 yards.

Caeden Holcomb carried the ball six times for 47 yards, and that included a 7-yard TD run to give RHP a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Nathaniel Shine had a 12-yard TD run, and he finished with 49 yards on four carries.

Adrian Mendoza rushed for 47 yards on four carries.

Christian Lee closed out the scoring for the Kares with a 5-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter.

Rain Pollock had a 33-yard pick-six for RHP.

Ivan Tkach had a game-high eight tackles for Rio Hondo Prep.

Gutierrez had a pretty brutal game behind center for Marquez.

He completed just 2-of-15 for 118 yards, one TD and the one interception to Pollock.

Samples had both catches for 118 yards.

Gutierrez also scored on a 3-yard TD run on the final play of the game.

Up next: The Kares host Bellflower next Friday at 7.

The Buccaneers (0-3) have yet to win a game, and they’ve been outscored by Garden Grove, Lawndale and Oxnard by a combined margin of 137-12.
