Football:

Something had to give.

St. Francis (0-3) and Muir (0-2) were both looking for their first win of the 2024 season.

And things looked good for the Golden Knights.

After two weeks on the shelf, SFHS quarterback John Sanders returned to the lineup on Friday evening.

After a 37-yard field goal by Shawn Sanders, his big brother John tossed a 38-yard TD pass to Deveon Blaylock, and a 50-yard scoring strike to JT Martin.

Sanders was 24-of-45 for 285 yards and two TD’s.

With 9:38 to play in the third quarter, SFHS led 18-8.

To their credit, the Mustangs scored the game’s final 21 points and they secured a 28-18 victory.

Zion McDonald started the scoring with a 52-yard TD on a punt return to give Muir the 7-0 lead.

Michael Allen’s 3-yard TD run with 4:08 remaining in the third quarter cut the St. Francis lead to 18-13.

Keyon Mills recaptured the lead for MHS when he hooked up with Arturo Ayers on a 24-yard TD pass, and a two-point conversion.

Alijah Parker closed out the scoring with his 31-yard TD run with just over eight minutes to play.

Up next: The Mustangs and Golden Knights will host games next Friday.

The Mustangs open Pacific League play with a showdown against Burbank.

The Golden Knights will battle Loyola in Jim Bonds Stadium.

Both games are set for 7.
