Football:

And that’s why they play the game.

The popular opinion on Friday was that West Covina was going to secure another Kings of Cameron rivalry victory over South Hills.

In fact, many (local football fans) expected it to be a one-sided affair for the Bulldogs.

And everything seemed to fall into place, as WCHS led 13-3 in the fourth quarter.

Jacob Calderon’s boys and girl, however, didn’t give a (bleep) what anyone was saying and they rallied for a 16-13 victory at WCHS.

Trailing 6-0 in the third quarter, female kicker, Briana Castruita, booted a 27-yard field goal to cut the lead in half.

The two West Covina scores came on a 2-yard TD run by Zander Requena and a 1-yard keeper from Chris Perez.

South Hills quarterback Fabian Marez tossed a pair of fourth-quarter TD passes to secure a dramatic and a much-needed win for the Huskies.

Marez threw for 200 yards and the two scores.

Marez also rushed for 50 yards.

Danny Resendiz had five catches for 110 yards in Friday’s win.

And that included TD receptions of 30 and 45 yards from Marez.

Jacob Dinisi recovered a WCHS fumble at the 50-yard line with 48 seconds to secure the win for the Huskies.

“After the loss last week, the boys realized that hard work really does pay off, and you have to practice hard during the week to make the game easy,” said South Hills coach, Jacob Calderon.

“Our guys really wanted it tonight and they showed out.”

Up next: The Huskies take next week off, and on September 27th, they’ll host El Rancho.

The Bulldogs welcome Summit to their stadium this Friday at 7.

The Sky Hawks (3-1) secured a 13-9 victory over St. Anthony.
