Football:
Game stats don’t always tell the whole story.
But in Saturday’s 2024 season opener at Mt. San Jacinto College, Mt. SAC had a 173 to minus-33 advantage in rushing yards.
And the Mounties, who trailed twice in the first quarter, wore their hosts down and claimed a 38-21 victory at MSJC.
Devin Miles anchored the MSAC ground game with 108 yards on 15 carries, and that included a 23-yard TD run.
The Mounties had two quarterbacks that tossed a pair of TD passes apiece.
Noah Fuailetolo completed 9 of 17 for 130 yards.
Fuailetolo had a 55-yard TD pass to Devon Anderson, and an 8-yard scoring strike to Dayjohn Wheeler.
Jack Benson went 11 of 15 for 92 yards.
Benson connected with Pierce Brown on a 7-yard TD pass.
And De’Shon Thompson caught an 8-yard TD from Benson.
Anderson caught three passes for 68 yards and the score.
Thompson reeled in four passes for 33 yards and one TD.
Matthew Fidone went 5-for-5 on extra-point attempts, and he booted a 40-yard field goal.
Logan Gonzalez completed 35-of-62 for 282 yards and two scores.
Gonzalez was picked by Mt. SAC’s Juan Salas and Harold Peters.
Jackson Weng (8-for-92 & one TD), Koa Apana (8-55 & 0) and Christian Kretz (9-51 & 0 TD’s) combined to catch 25 passes for 198 yards.
Juan Salas led the Mounties defense with eight tackles, while Jaylen Crutchfield had seven.
Kalim Mikhail, Dmitri Pierre and Harold Peters had five tackles apiece in Saturday’s win.
Up next: The Mounties will host Ventura next Saturday at 6.
The Pirates (1-0) claimed a 49-34 victory over Saddleback.
