Football:

Citrus College opened the 2024 season in Santa Clarita.

And their scheduled 1 pm kickoff was pushed back to 6 because of the brutal heat.

The change obviously had zero effect on Brandon Hayashi’s boys, as the Owls cruised to a 31-20 victory at Canyons.

Citrus had a 354-206 advantage in total offense, but it was a 195-48 discrepancy on the ground that suited the Owls well.

Jamahl Wilson carried the ball 15 times for 94 yards and that included TD runs of 22 and 6 yards.

Myion Walker (12-40) and Tobin O’Dell (11-38) combined to gain 78 yards on 23 carries.

Koy Riggin completed 11 of 16 for 140 yards with no TD’s or interceptions.

Tobin O’Dell was 3 of 8 for 19 yards, including a 15-yard TD pass to Talan O’Dell.

Talan O’Dell caught three passes for 48 yards, and Emmanuel Mogbolu reeled in three passes for 40 yards.

Brady Welch got the start for Canyons, and he completed 17-of-28 for 158 yards.

Welch tossed a 33-yard TD pass to Da’Marrie Smith, and an 11-yard scoring strike to Joseph Saenz.

Smith had game-highs in receptions (6) and receiving yards (60).

Although they won comfortably, not everything went well for the Owls.

They were flagged 18 times for an insane 241 yards, as opposed to Canyons’ six penalties for 72 yards.

Kyle Ferm had five tackles to pace the Citrus defense.

Damond Stewart, Donovan Perez and Jadakiss Vaokakala tallied four tackles apiece.

Christian Sampson had one tackle to go with his interception.

Up next: The Owls host Mt. San Jacinto next Saturday at 6 in their home opener.

MSJC was on the wrong end of a 38-21 encounter with Mt. SAC.
