Football:
Ben Buys won his first game as a college head coach on Saturday night.
His defense held LA Valley College in check throughout a 23-13 victory in the 2024 season opener in Rancho Cucamonga.
The Panthers took a 20-0 lead into the fourth quarter and the outcome was never in doubt.
Chaffey enjoyed a 392-163 advantage in total offense, including a 22-11 edge in offensive first downs.
The Panthers ‘D’ held LAVC to minus-four yards rushing.
Julian Viramontes completed 19-of-31 for 237 yards.
Viramontes tossed a 39-yard TD pass to Nehemiah Harrison, and a 13-yard scoring strike to Corey Cabriales.
Jeremiah Spann got Chaffey on the board with a 1-yard TD run with 2:36 to play in the first quarter.
Spann carried the ball 11 times for a game-high 75 yards and the TD.
Alapaki Paiva gained 51 yards on 11 carries for the Panthers.
Harrison caught five passes for 89 yards and the one TD.
And Cabriales had four receptions for 47 yards and one score.
Cabriales also brought a punt back for a TD, but a Chaffey penalty cost him another score.
Jeremiah Beck caught four passes for 48 yards, and Damari Heller had four receptions for 47 yards.
LAVC’s Daryus Warren completed 12 of 26 for 138 yards.
Warren didn’t throw a TD pass, but he did score on a 14-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
Gavin Goulette went 2-of-5 for 20 yards, and that included a 20-yard TD pass to K’Shaun White in the fourth quarter.
Lamar Gray led Chaffey with six tackles, while Jeremiah Burchette and Sivai Dejurnett-Simmons had five tackles apiece.
Burchette (2.5), Dejurnett-Simmons (2) and Gray (.5) combined for five sacks on Saturday evening.
Up next: The Panthers travel to LA Pierce next Saturday at 6.
