It didn’t come easily, but Covina is now 3-0 to start the 2024 season.
The Colts trailed winless Diamond Ranch 13-0, 13-7, 21-15, 27-23 and 33-31 in Thursday’s night showdown at Covina District Field.
But the most consequential quarterback in Covina High School history wasn’t going to let his boys lose.
Jake Duronslet had four total TD’s (three passing & one rushing) to lead CHS to a 45-39 victory over the Panthers.
Duronslet completed 18 of his 23 pass attempts for 220 yards.
As mentioned, he tossed three TD passes and didn’t turn the ball over.
Duronslet had 47 rushing yards on eight carries, including an 8-yard TD run.
Trailing 33-31, Gatsbee Gumban changed the complexion of the game when he picked up a fumble and returned it 20 yards for a TD and a 39-33 lead.
Duronslet followed that with a 25-yard TD pass to Matthew Olivas.
Olivas had a monster night with 11 catches for 149 yards and three TD’s.
Early on, the Colts trailed 13-0, but Kevin Perez ran a kickoff back 88 yards to get CHS on the board.
Kwame Parrish continued to anchor the ground game.
Parrish carried the ball 30 times for 172 yards.
Parrish had a 38-yard run that was his longest of the night.
Duronslet now has a record 80 career TD passes and he’s just 179 passing yards from becoming the CHS career leader (6,618).
