Football:
You couldn’t blame West Covina or their visitors from El Rancho for a low-scoring first quarter.
The temperature on the field was 99 degrees at kickoff, but it seemed to be the humidity that was the biggest impediment on Thursday night.
The first six El Rancho points came from 24-and-19-yard field goals off the foot of Adrian Orihuela.
The Dons took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter after a 30-yard scoring strike from Ryan Dominguez to Giovanni Montenegro, and a Dominguez to Montenegro 2-point conversion pass.
The Bulldogs, however, would shut ERHS out the rest of the way, and they cruised to a 41-14 victory.
Zander Requena had a game-high 125 yards rushing, which included a 35-yard TD run in the second half.
Requena gave WCHS its first lead of the game at 7-3 when he caught a 58-yard TD pass from Chris Perez along the visiting sidelines.
Angel Murillo had a big night on both sides of the ball.
Murillo had TD runs of 2 and 7 yards.
And he registered a 7-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter.
Along with his first-quarter score to Requena, Perez also tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Jesus Gonzalez.
Isaiah Ruiz, easily one of the SGV’s best tacklers and the defensive leader for three-time CIF championship coach Mike Maggiore, tallied 80 yards on the ground.
Chris Perez had an effective night, completing 7 of 11 for 103 yards and two scores.
Dominguez had 150 passing yards for Adrian Medrano’s Dons.
Up next: The Bulldogs will host South Hills next Friday at 7.
The Huskies (1-1) host St. Genevieve (1-1) tonight (Friday) at 7 at Covina District Field.
