Football:
How would West Covina respond to its week-zero (49-6) setback at perennial SGV area power Bishop Amat?
Pretty well, actually.
WCHS secured a 45-28 victory over their visitors from Los Altos.
The Bulldogs rushed for 310 yards in Friday’s win.
Zander Requena carried the ball 22 times for 140 yards.
Requena had TD runs of 7, 15 and 2 yards.
He also caught a 1-yard TD pass from Chris Perez.
Isaac Villescas contributed a 24-yard TD run and he caught three passes for 32 yards.
Isaac Ruiz totaled 46 rushing yards on nine carries, and that included a 3-yard TD run.
Perez was 10 for 16 for 81 yards and the one score.
Freshman Vance Davis had three receptions for 21 yards.
Defensively, their stud, Isaiah Ruiz, led the way.
Ruiz finished with 10 tackles and a sack.
Angel Murillo had seven tackles, while Josiah Joseph tallied six tackles and a sack.
Jaylen Long and Marciano Ramirez both picked Los Altos passes.
Isaiah Rodríguez-Arias kicked a 27-yard field goal, and he converted on all six of his extra-point attempts.
One thing is for sure: Three-time CIF-SS champion coach Mike Maggiore and his staff will focus on limiting turnovers.
The Conquerors scored 21 of their 28 points from WCHS miscues.
Up next: The Bulldogs host El Rancho on Thursday night at 7.
The Dons (1-1) claimed a 42-20 victory at Bell Gardens in a week-one contest.
