Football:

Bonita was less than one minute away from opening the 2024 season at 2-0.

The Bearcats led their visitors from Ontario Christian by eight points.

OCHS had the ball at their own 41-yard line.

And the young man leading the Knights’ offense (Daniel Mielke) just happened to be the same guy that transferred out of Bonita after the conclusion of the 2023 season.

It wouldn’t be hyperbole to say that emotions were running high.

Mielke dropped back to pass and any hopes he had of forcing overtime were dashed when Jacob Gill picked the Ontario Christian sophomore to secure a 35-27 victory at BHS.

The home crowd was understandably jubilant, and they broke into a chant of “Travis Lippert, Travis Lippert, Travis Lippert.”

Lippert, the BHS quarterback, bested Mielke in every category.

He completed 19 of his 24 pass attempts for 300 yards.

Lippert tossed three TD passes and didn’t get picked.

His counterpart went 15 of 23 for 134 yards.

Mielke had two passing TD’s and he was intercepted twice.

However, a Jacob Maddox pick of Mielke was negated because of a defensive holding call against the Bearcats.

Lippert had 24-and-34-yard TD passes to Joseph Lara, and a 23-yard scoring connection with Cole Parra.

Mielke’s TD passes included a 19-yard scoring strike to Ryan Luque, and Bryce Thacker reeled in a 6-yard TD reception.

Although Maddox didn’t get an official interception, he certainly left his mark on the win.

His 90-yard kickoff return for a TD in the third quarter tied the game at 14-14.

Dylan Robinson’s 75-yard punt return for a TD gave Bonita a 35-21 lead with 8:16 to play.

Noah Mikhail caught five passes for 79 yards.

Joseph Lara might get lost in the weeds because of the star power of Robinson, Mikhail, Lippert and others.

But the BHS sophomore is already raising his stock through the first two games of 2024.

On Friday, he had four catches for 68 yards and the two TD’s, and he carried the ball 10 times for 50 yards.

Parra caught three passes for 41 yards and Gil had three receptions for 54 yards.

Elia Rosales caught a 37-yard pass from Lippert.

Logan Escoto carried the ball nine times for 98 yards and that included a 12-yard TD run in the fourth quarter for the Knights.

Ryan Loque caught four passes for 31 yards and one TD, and Dillon Sykes had three receptions for 43 yards.

Mielke had a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter to give OCHS a temporary 14-7 lead.

Up next: BHS will host Grand Terrace next Friday at 7.

The Titans (0-2) are coming off a 33-21 setback at Palm Springs.
