Football:

Rio Hondo Prep won its sixth consecutive game against their rival from Pasadena Poly.

And in spite of a ridiculous 11 am kickoff in August, the Kares pounced on the Panthers early and decimated Poly, 65-19, on Saturday.

RHP scored the game’s first 41 points.

The most telling stat of the game had to be the discrepancy in rushing yards.

The Kares totaled 302 yards to minus-23 for the Panthers.

In all, RHP had a 451-232 advantage in total offense.

Seven Rio Hondo Prep players scored at least one TD.

Nathaniel Shine gained 67 yards on five carries, and that included TD runs of 1 and 52 yards.

Noah Penunuri only carried the ball twice for 54 yards, but he made the most of it.

Penunuri scored a 47-yard TD, converted on a 2-point run and he surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards.

Yanick Diaz was an effective 4-of-5 for 136 yards.

Diaz tossed a 36-yard TD pass to Tyler Dang and a 71-yard scoring strike to Nate Curtis.

Andy Xu had a 43-yard pick-six and a 10-yard TD run.

TJ McElrath had a big day in a losing cause.

McElrath caught seven passes for 126 yards, including TD receptions of 18 and 55 yards.

Alister Chan completed 13 of 24 for 170 yards.

He tossed a pair of TD passes and was picked once.

Troy Seto led RHP with five tackles, while Calogero Chico, Andy Xu and Caeden Holcomb had four tackles apiece.

Holcomb also had a 6-yard TD run for the Kares.

Up next: RHP will host Maranatha next Saturday at 7.

The Minutemen claimed a 35-21 victory over Fullerton, and Miles O’Malley surpassed 4,000 rushing yards after 230 yards and three TD’s.

Quotable:

Rio Hondo Prep coach, Mark Carson: “We were a little concerned about the early start time, but the guys came out hittin’ and that led to the great start. Once again, Yanick (Diaz) did a great job spreading the ball around, including the first TD to Tyler. Andy Xu showed us again why he’s such a special player with his pick-six.”
