Boys & Girls Athletes of the Week:
For the first time in this site’s five-year history, the boys’ and girls’ athletes of the week compete for the same high school.
Even more rare, they play the same position, and they just happen to be a couple.
Bonita High School quarterbacks Travis Lippert (2-0) and Tressa Beatty (4-0) have led their programs to six combined wins to start the 2024 season for the BHS football and flag football teams.
Travis Lippert had his breakout game this past Friday.
Lippert completed 19 of his 24 pass attempts for 300 yards in a 35-27 victory over their visitors from Ontario Christian.
He tossed three TD passes and most important, the Bearcats signal caller didn’t turn the ball over.
And it wasn’t just any win.
BHS defeated their 2023 quarterback Daniel Mielke, who departed the La Verne school last year.
Lippert bested Mielke in completions (19-15), passing yards (300-134), TD’s (3-2) and turnovers (0-1).
Through week one of the 2024 season, Lippert has a 75-percent completion ratio, six TD passes and one INT.
Tressa Beatty, the daughter of Bonita co-head coach Bo Beatty, has the Bearcats off to a great start over the first four flag football games in school history.
BHS is 4-0 and they’ve outscored Don Lugo, Sierra Vista, Upland and Yorba Linda by a combined margin of 125-19.
After decimating the Conquistadores and Dons by identical 47-0 scores, the competition got much better this past week.
Bonita defeated Upland, 12-6, on Tuesday, and they rallied to claim a 19-13 victory over Yorba Linda.
Beatty completed 15 of 23 for 130 yards, and she had one TD, one INT and a rushing TD against the Highlanders.
The very next night, Beatty intercepted her Mustangs’ counterpart late, and with 18 seconds to play, the BHS junior scored on a 12-yard run.
In all, Beatty went 16 of 26 for 139 yards, tossed one TD pass and didn’t turn the ball over.
She also scored both rushing TD’s in the dramatic six-point victory over Yorba Linda.
