Football:

There’s something in the water at Monrovia High School.

Whether it’s Noah Rodriguez, Brian Salazar or Jesse Saucedo at quarterback, year after year, the Wildcats continue to put up huge numbers offensively.

And Thursday night was no different, as MHS hosted Eagle Rock.

Monrovia scored 42 first-half points, and they held on for a 59-40 victory.

And they started early.

On the second play of the game, freshman quarterback Jesse Saucedo tossed a 73-yard TD pass to Troy Grise.

Grise finished with three receptions for 108 yards and two scores.

Vince Paez had three catches of his own for 62 yards.

Joshua Griffiths had 30 receiving yards on a pair of catches.

Their quarterback completed 10-of-15 for 208 yards.

Saucedo had two first-half TD’s and then the running game took over.

The Monrovia ground game totaled 451 rushing yards on 35 carries and six scores.

Griffiths gained 200 yards on 10 carries, including four TD’s.

Byron Bell (12-for-108 and one TD) and Grise (7-for-118 and one score) combined for 226 yards and two TD’s on the ground.

In the first half, MHS was plagued with penalties.

In fact, they were flagged on back-to-back plays that would have resulted in touchdowns.

The first half took nearly two hours to complete thanks to a lot of passing and an inordinate number of flags on the turf.

Lucas Martinez led the Wildcats defense with nine tackles.

Brandon Fajardo, Frankie Zamora, Griffiths and David Alvarez had six tackles apiece.

Up next: The Wildcats travel to Glendale next Friday at 7.

The Nitros (1-0) have a week-zero 38-0 victory over Bosco Tech, and they battle Duarte tonight at 7.
