Football:
Monrovia opened the 2024 season both impressively and balanced.
The Wildcats cruised to a 35-7 victory over their visitors from Palmdale.
After a scoreless first quarter, MHS tallied 14 points in the second quarter, and put the game on ice with three TD’s in the third.
Monrovia had 523 yards of total offense.
Jesse Saucedo had an incredible start to his high school football career.
The freshman completed 12-of-18 for 320 yards.
Saucedo tossed three TD passes and he didn’t turn the ball over.
Three Wildcats’ running backs had 55 yards or more on the ground.
Josh Griffiths led the way with 78 yards on six carries, including a pair of TD runs.
Byron Bell and Saucedo totaled 55 yards apiece on six and nine carries, respectively.
Vince Paez caught four passes for 101 yards and two scores.
Tony Grise had five receptions for 102 yards and that included one TD catch.
Griffiths totaled 71 receiving yards on six catches.
Byron Bell had three receptions for 37 yards.
Lucas Martinez led the Monrovia defense with eight tackles, while David Alvarez, Dominic Lino and Kaleb Ellison registered seven tackles apiece.
Ellison led MHS with two sacks.
Grise and Griffiths picked off one Palmdale pass apiece.
Up next: The Wildcats host Eagle Rock on Thursday at 7.
The Eagles (1-0) put a 48-8 beatdown on Taft in their week-zero contest.
