Baseball:

The Arroyo Seco Sentinels won the inaugural Baseball Census Collegiate Summer League regular season title last week.

And on Wednesday, the Sentinels secured the BCCSL postseason championship, and they did so in the most dramatic fashion possible.

After dropping game one, 10-4, on Tuesday, in the best-of-three championship series, the Sentinels trailed 8-1 in game two and they were one out away from elimination, and an Outlaws’ sweep.

They scored eight times in the top of the ninth, got one more in the 10th, and scored three runs in the 11th inning to edge the Outlaws, 13-12, at Ben Hines Field in La Verne.

Shortly thereafter, the Sentinels put a 15-1 beatdown on the Outlaws in the seven-inning third-and-deciding-game to secure the BCCSL championship.

Clay Porter and Seth Reker had one single apiece.

The Sentinels scored five runs apiece off of Logan Corthell, Matthew Helguerra, and Cam Van Echten on a combined 16 hits.

Corthell, Helguerra and Van Echten teamed up to walk five and struck out five Sentinels through the first five innings.

One of Helguerra’s runs was unearned.

Lastly, I asked Sentinels’ manager Sean Fasig the following: What was the mood like in the dugout in the ninth inning? How stunned was everyone that they scored eight times with two outs? Did anyone in particular have big base hits in the ninth? Who keyed the final inning where you scored three runs? After all these weeks and hours running in this league and the Sentinels, to win a champ in such dramatic fashion, what are your feelings as you process this crazy day?

Said Sean Fasig: “Obviously, when you’re down by a large amount of runs, it’s tough to believe that you’ll come back. But we were able to put together a two-out rally, and it just kind of snow balled from there. I think we were all stunned. I don’t think anyone actually thought we would be able to pull off a comeback with two outs and down seven runs. Cam Andrews hit a three-run triple to take the lead in the top of the ninth with two outs to put us up. He came off the bench earlier in the inning to start the rally.

It was a team effort. We had some bounces go our way in the inning, and we were able to take advantage of the opportunities presented to us. I’m just happy that our guys were able to compete in a playoff atmosphere leading into their upcoming seasons. For me, the goal of summer ball is to make sure these guys return to their schools healthy and ready to compete for a role on their college teams. A summer ball championship is not as important as making sure these guys are ready to compete in the spring.”
