Outlaws Defeat Monarchs 9-5 in Baseball Census Collegiate Summer League Playoffs; Seth Reker Had Two Doubles & Drove in a Pair of Runs

The California Outlaws rebounded from an early 4-0 deficit, and they went on to claim a 9-5 victory over the San Gabriel Valley Monarchs in the Baseball Census Collegiate Summer League playoffs.

The Outlaws got four runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 4-4.

And they would score three times in the third and twice more in the fourth to earn a spot in the best-of-three championship series against the Arroyo Seco Sentinels which gets underway on Tuesday at Ben Hines Field in La Verne.

Matthew Helguerra was credited with the win after going three scoreless and hitless innings in relief.

Helguerra issued two walks and fanned three Monarchs’ batters.

Andres Zarate provided three innings and he surrendered just one run on three hits.

Zarate walked one and struck out three.

Cam Van Echten went a scoreless ninth to close out the win.

Ivan Barragan, Adrian Roman and David Shackleford doubled, scored and drove in one run apiece.

Shane Dougherty singled and scored a pair of runs.

Ethan Nunez drew a pair of walks and had two singles.

Benny Vogel walked and had an RBI.

Aidan Salcedo drove in a run on a sac fly and Joey Capobianco walked and singled.

Josh Porter was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs (four earned) on five hits over 2 1/3 innings.

Porter issued four walks and fanned a pair of Outlaws.

Seth Reker, one of the Baseball Census Collegiate Summer League standouts, went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, one run and two RBIs.

Matt Diaz walked, singled and drove in a run.

Austin Easter was plunked three times and scored.

Clay Porter walked, singled and scored two runs.

Former Rancho Cucamonga player, Aaron Whobrey, went 2-for-3 with a walk, run and one RBI.

Vito Fowler drew a pair of walks and scored two times.

Jared Benash went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Marcus Moyer was hit by pitch, walked, scored and had an RBI.

Jason Del Villar walked and scored.

Up next: The Outlaws meet up with the Arroyo Seco Sentinels on Tuesday at 4 at Ben Hines Field in La Verne in game one of a best-of-three series.

Game two is slated for 12:30 on Wednesday, and if need be, a deciding third game would follow that same day.
