One day after a disappointing 9-0 loss in the first round to Nicaragua, Covina showed its mettle at the 2024 Colt World Series in Marion, Illinois.
Facing elimination, and trailing, 7-4, early on, they would rally and trounce Bay City, Michigan, 23-8, on Saturday afternoon.
Covina out-hit Michigan, 18-8, and 10 separate players had at least one base hit.
After Bay County scored seven runs on four hits in the first two innings, Diego Garza came on and provided three scoreless innings to earn the win.
Garza allowed just two hits, didn’t issue a walk and struck out a pair of Michigan batters.
Reed Agosta got the final four outs without any damage for Covina.
Offensively, Dylan Hynes had a monster game, going 4-for-5 with a walk, three runs and five RBIs.
Aiden Aramburo walked, had two doubles, scored four times and drove in three.
Diego Flores went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and three RBIs.
Tyler Womack drew a pair of walks, doubled and scored three runs.
Reed Agosta went 3-for-4 with two walks, a double, five runs and two RBIs.
Noah Robledo singled and drove in a pair of runs.
Garza helped his own cause by walking twice, singling and driving in one run.
Omar Paredes walked, singled, scored twice and had one RBI.
Andy Flores singled and scored two runs.
Johnathon Barnett singled and had one RBI.
Jackson Dossey drew two walks, scored and had one RBI.
Kevin Mitchell walked and scored.
Up next: Covina will face Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday at noon in an elimination game.
