College Baseball:

What a rookie season it’s been for University of Tennessee freshman, Dean Curley.

The former Northview/current UT shortstop and his boys just wrapped up the Knoxville Regional on Sunday.

And they did so in dominant form.

Tennessee outscored Northern Kentucky (9-3), Indiana (12-6) and Southern Miss (12-3) by a combined margin of 33-12.

For just the second time in program history, UT is the No. 1 national seed.

Their 53 wins through Sunday is tops among all Division 1 teams.

And it’s the program’s second most victories this century.

In 2022, the Vols went 57-9.

Curley is batting .280 with 53 hits, 47 runs, eight doubles, one triple, 11 HR, 43 RBIs, a .394 on-base percentage, and he’s walked 26 times.

On March 5th, in just his 13th collegiate game, Curley wrote his name into the program’s record book.

Curley hit three home runs and drove in nine in the Vols 15-5 victory over Kansas State.

He became the sixth UT player to hit three home runs in a game, and more impressively, he’s the first freshman to accomplish that feat.

In this past weekend’s three games, Curley went 4-for-12 with five RBIs.

He went 0-for-2 with a sac fly in the regional opener against Northern Kentucky.

Curley had a two-run HR in Saturday’s and Sunday’s wins over Indiana and Southern Miss, respectively.

On Sunday, UT set a new program record with 159 team HR’s.

Curley is one of six Tennessee players with 10 home runs or more.

Christian Moore has a team-high 29 HR’s.

Tennessee and Kentucky had identical 22-8 records atop the SEC (East Division) standings, but the Volunteers claimed two of three with the Wildcats.

And UT secured an SEC tournament championship thanks to a 4-3 victory over LSU on May 26th.

Up next: The Vols (53-11) will host the winner of Monday’s Greenville Regional final between East Carolina and Evansville.

If UT survives this weekend, they’ll be headed to Omaha for the seventh time, including trips in 2021 and 2023.
