Baseball:

The greatest baseball season in Azusa High School history finally came to an end on Saturday evening.

Two weeks after they claimed the program’s first CIF-Southern Section (Division 8) championship in 41 years, the Aztecs earned a spot in Saturday’s CIF State Division 5 So Cal Regional final at APU because of a pair of one-run victories over University (3-2) and Mount Miguel (6-5), respectively.

AHS entered their title-game showdown with Chavez of Delano on a seven-game win streak.

But the Titans made the best of their 160-mile drive by defeating the Aztecs, 8-6, in nine innings.

Trailing 6-4, Azusa scored single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to force extra innings.

Chavez out-hit Azusa, 16-8, and they never trailed.

Edward Romero surrendered four runs on seven hits over two innings.

Zach Huizar went four innings, and he allowed two runs on six hits.

Huizar issued three walks and struck out a pair of CHS batters.

Ricardo Medina allowed two runs on two hits over two innings.

He didn’t surrender a free pass and fanned a pair of Titans.

In the top of the ninth inning, the first five Chavez batters reached base (four singles & one walk).

Miguel Ramirez and Jose Agredano had consecutive RBI singles in the ninth.

Agredano finished with two hits, drew a walk, scored and had the one RBI.

Benji Perez went 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, a run and four RBIs.

Jayden Popoy went 2-for-4 with a walk and one run.

Jacob Sixtos walked, singled and scored.

Emmanuel Segura went 1-for-3, scored twice and had one RBI.

Marcos DeLira singled, doubled and scored.

Daniel Carrillo singled twice and scored.

Azusa got to Marcos DeLira for three runs on three hits over three innings.

DeLira issued one walk and struck out three AHS batters.

Jose Agredano was credited with the win after going a scoreless and hitless eighth and ninth innings.

Agredano didn’t surrender a base on balls, and he fanned a pair of Aztecs.

Josh Torres drew a pair of walks, scored three runs and his RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning pulled Azusa to within 6-5 of Chavez.

Matt Huizar went 2-for-3 with a walk, single and an RBI double in the third inning.

Terry Chavez tripled and scored.

Jacob Elliot singled, doubled and scored.

Edward Romero walked and scored.

Isaac Miranda had an RBI ground out.

To their credit, Chavez was 8-12 after a 10-2 loss at Firebaugh on April 18th.

The Titans, however, closed out the 2024 regular and postseason on a 14-game win streak.

Congrats to Coach Al Sanchez, his staff and their players for making program and school history.
