Baseball:
Azusa opened the CIF State Division 5 So Cal Regional playoffs with a 3-2 victory over University.
The CIF-SS Division 8 champs survived a pair of seventh-inning runs by the Wildcats.
Edward Romero went 6 1/3 innings and he allowed two runs on four hits to earn the win.
Romero issued a pair of walks and struck out six UHS batters.
Zach Huizar got the final two outs to earn the save.
Evan Han singled and doubled for the Wildcats.
Adrian Ambriz had an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to get UHS on the board.
Ambriz also scored one run.
Payton Graue drew a seventh-inning walk and scored.
Ambriz went all six innings for University, and he was charged with three runs on seven hits.
Ambriz walked a pair and struck out eight Azusa batters.
Matt Huizar singled, doubled and scored.
Jacob Ayon had an RBI base hit in the fourth to give AHS a 2-0 lead.
Romero singled and was hit by pitch.
His pinch runner, Rafael Molina, scored on Ayon’s base hit.
Terry Chavez, Joseph Durand and Zach Huizar had one hit apiece for the Aztecs.
Josh Torres walked and scored.
Up next: The Aztecs will host Mount Miguel on Thursday at 4.
The Matadors (16-16) edged Pacifica Christian, 2-0, in their first-round game.
