Baseball:
St. Francis was just three outs away from a potential CIF-SS Division 4 championship on Saturday afternoon at Diamond Stadium in Lake Elsinore.
The Golden Knights led Camarillo, 1-0, as the Scorpions grabbed their bats in the top of the seventh inning.
St. Francis can certainly relate to that old adage about how costly leadoff walks/hits can be.
Troy Arenzana drew a leadoff walk off Noah Aguilar-Tanphanich in the top of the seventh.
Lucas Miller came in to run for Arenzana.
Nate Tostado immediately cashed in the free pass with an RBI double, and the game was tied at 1-1.
With the go-ahead run on second base and no outs, Aiden Mahoney replaced Aguilar-Phantanich on the mound.
Victor Tostado bunted his brother over to third base.
And one batter later, Trotter Enright doubled Nate Tostado home for what turned out to be the game winning run.
Enright went 3-for-4 with the RBI.
Tommy Goodwin drew a pair of walks and doubled.
Boston Bateman singled once for the D-3 champs.
Aguilar-Tanphanich was charged with two runs on one hit over two innings.
He walked one and fanned two.
Aaron Hernandez went four scoreless innings for St. Francis, and he allowed three hits.
Hernandez walked two and struck out four Scorpions.
Aiden Mahoney provided a scoreless inning in relief, surrendering two hits, walking one and striking out one CHS batter.
Boston Bateman earned the win.
The Camarillo senior went six innings, and he was charged with an unearned run on one hit.
Bateman issued one walk and struck out 11 St. Francis batters.
Victor Tostado earned the save with a scoreless seventh in relief.
Tostado didn’t allow a hit, walked one and struck out one Golden Knight.
Bateman and Tostado combined to strike out nine separate SFHS batters at least once.
John Calmette’s two-out single in the bottom of the sixth was the only hit of the game for St. Francis.
Dominik Hidalgo led off the bottom of the third inning with a walk.
Landon Pratt came in to run for Hidalgo.
Samuel Rodriguez bunted him to second, and Pratt advanced to third on a passed ball.
Dane Shepard’s sac fly gave St. Francis a 1-0 lead.
Up next: The Golden Knights will get their first-round state opponent in the next couple of days.
