Baseball:
If there was ever an instance that a ‘group MVP’ could and should be awarded, this would be the one.
Chino Hills just claimed a CIF-SS Division 5 title after Friday’s 4-1 victory over Santa Monica at Diamond Stadium in Lake Elsinore.
And the CHHS pitching staff is that group MVP I was talking about.
In wins over Bellflower (3-1), Bloomington (9-1), Montebello (7-0), Chino (2-0) and Santa Monica (4-1), the CHHS staff allowed just three total runs in 35 innings of work.
When Santa Monica scored its lone run in the top of the sixth, it snapped a 20-inning scoreless streak by the Chino Hills pitching staff.
On Friday, it was a pair of sophomores that kept the Vikings’ bats in check throughout the D-5 title game.
Brody Buoncristiani went five scoreless innings and allowed two hits to earn the win.
Buoncristiani issued a pair of walks and struck out four SMHS batters.
Andrew Baldomino got the final six outs to officially secure a championship.
Baldomino allowed one run one two hits.
He walked one and fanned one Santa Monica batter.
Blue Hunter doubled and scored on a sixth-inning sac fly by Sage Douglas.
Theo Smith had half of the Vikings’ four hits.
Manny Lares doubled in Friday’s loss.
Jackson Klein was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks over three innings.
Tony Ponce provided three scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and a walk.
Chino Hills scored twice in the bottom of the first and got two more in the third inning.
Buoncristiani walked, doubled and scored.
Baldomino went 2-for-4 with a double, run and two RBIs.
Jackson Gray had a pair of singles, two runs and an RBI.
Favian Vasquez singled and doubled.
Frankie Brazil had one RBI for the Huskies.
Cannon Billingsley, Ryan Dabuet and Jacob Jimenez singled for the D-5 champions.
CHHS opened Baseline League play in the middle of March 0-3-1, but they went on to finish third (8-6-1) and they closed out the regular season and the playoffs with seven consecutive wins.
Up next: The Huskies have next week off, and they open the CIF State playoffs on Tuesday, May 28th.
