Gabriel Lopez had almost zero room for error on Friday.
The Arcadia High School lefty was facing the No. 1 seed and the eighth-ranked team in the state (MaxPreps) in the quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.
The AHS senior would go the distance to defeat Westlake, 2-1, to earn the Apaches a spot in Tuesday’s semifinal.
Lopez allowed a Noah Stead RBI single in the top of the fourth inning, but that would be all the Warriors could muster offensively.
Lopez surrendered two hits, walked one and struck out 11.
Of the 10 WHS batters with at least one official at-bat, Lopez got nine Warriors on strikes at least once.
Lopez persevered through 108 pitches to finish what he started.
On the season, Lopez is 9-1 with a 1.32 ERA.
Up next: Arcadia (22-7) travels to Hart on Tuesday with a spot in the D-2 final on the line.
