Baseball:

The only thing better than winning a CIF-SS playoff game for the first time in 18 years is following that up with another victory.

And that’s exactly what St. Francis did.

Five days after an 8-3 victory at Windward in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs, the Golden Knights edged San Juan Hills, 2-1, on Tuesday.

SJHHS is ranked 22nd in the state by MaxPreps.

Aiden Mahoney went five innings, and he allowed one run on four hits.

Mahoney issued four walks and struck out a pair of San Juan Hills batters.

Noah Aguilar-Tanphanich earned the save after two scoreless and hitless innings in relief.

He walked one and struck out three.

Zach Doyle hit a solo shot in the top of the sixth to account for the lone Stallions’ run.

Tanner Kessler, Jake Vuoso and Ryder Stowasser had one single apiece to account for the rest of the San Juan Hills offense.

Dane Grant got the loss after surrendering two runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Grant walked three and struck out seven SFHS batters.

Jordan Lewallen’s two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning gave St. Francis a 2-0 lead, and it also turned out to be the game winning runs.

Holden Deitch walked and scored.

John Calmette walked and scored.

Jordan Viramontes, Bobby Milton and Dominik Hildago and Jackson Pratt had one hit apiece for the Golden Knights.

Up next: The Golden Knights will host Paraclete on Friday with a spot in the semifinals at stake.

The Spirits (14-13) secured a 5-0 victory over La Quinta on Tuesday.
