In her first high school postseason start in the circle, Leila Diebert didn’t show any nerves.
Diebert stayed calm throughout in spite her knowing there was almost no room for error.
The Charter Oak freshman tossed a one-hit shutout and Angalina Arcos’ RBI base hit in the bottom of the fourth inning was enough in Thursday’s 1-0 victory over Lakewood in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.
Diebert didn’t issue a walk and she struck out five Lancers’ batters.
For the season, the freshman is 14-1 with a 1.21 ERA.
So far, Diebert has a six-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio during her freshman campaign.
At the plate, she’s batting .522 with 35 hits, 11 doubles, a triple, six home runs and 25 RBIs for the Valle Vista League champions.
Up next: The Chargers (18-2-1) will host Royal on Tuesday at 3:15.
The Highlanders (14-7) shut out Beckman, 3-0, in Thursday’s first-round contest.
