Baseball:

San Dimas got a solid effort on the mound from Jude Favela and Kody King in Friday’s 3-2 victory over West Ranch in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.

Favela went five innings, and he was charged with two unearned runs on eight hits.

Favela issued one walk and fanned three WRHS batters.

Kody King got the final six outs to earn the save.

King hit one batter, didn’t walk anyone and registered two strikeouts.

Nolan Stoll went 2-for-3 with a walk, and he scored one run.

Brett Ishikawa singled twice and scored.

Mikey Murr, Hunter Manning, Ryan Oh and Ty Diaz had one single apiece for West Ranch.

Jackson Banuelos was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings.

Banuelos walked one and struck out one SDHS batter.

Vaughn Coleman led off the bottom of the first and gave the Saints a 1-0 lead on Banuelos’ first pitch.

Kasen Khansarinia singled, and he’d score on Landon White’s double.

With the infield in, Ryan Castro’s first-inning single scored White and SDHS took a 3-0 lead.

After falling behind by three runs in the first, three WRHS pitchers would combine for six hitless and scoreless innings.

Favela looked to get out of a second-and-third scenario in the fifth with two outs.

But a throwing error cost the Saints two runs before Favela got the third out.

King’s only drama was hitting Ishikawa to lead off the top of the seventh inning.

But he would coax a fly ball to center off the bat of Stoll, and then King struck out Diaz.

With the tying run on first and two outs, King got Murr on a fly out to left to end the game.

West Ranch out-hit San Dimas, 8-4, but the boys in blue and white are the program moving forward.

Up next: The Saints will host Cypress on Tuesday.

The Centurions (19-9-1) claimed a 5-2 victory over Calabasas in their first-round game.
