Baseball:
It’s been an uphill climb all season, but the Ayala baseball program is better than its record would indicate.
After Friday’s 14-4 beatdown over their visitors from Claremont, the Bulldogs finished 10-5 in Palomares League games.
AHS will enter the postseason on a six-game win streak.
Ayala out-hit Claremont, 17-8.
And it should be mentioned that all five of their league losses came by two runs or less, and three of the five were one-run setbacks.
Ayala put the game on ice when they scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning.
They handed Claremont its ninth consecutive league loss.
Justin Ortega went three innings, and he allowed one run on four hits.
Ortega walked one and fanned a pair of Wolfpack batters.
Nolan Chan (two innings) and Liam Terrell (one) combined to provide three scoreless innings in relief.
Thomas Plotkin singled, doubled, scored and drove in one run.
Jack Grillo hit a solo HR and scored two runs.
Cory Smykla walked, singled and had two RBIs.
Hayden Vanderhoff went 2-for-3.
Wyatt Green was charged with 10 runs (four earned) on eight hits over four innings.
Green issued three walks and struck out five AHS batters.
Aidan Erlandsen went 2-for-3, with a triple, two runs and a pair of RBIs.
Jaden Valenzuela had three singles and two RBIs.
Elijah Duarte went 2-for-3 with a walk, double, run and three RBIs.
Aiden Granados walked, singled, doubled, scored three runs and drove in two.
Bryan Yang and Codey Brown singled, scored and had one RBI apiece.
Caleb Trugman went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs and one RBI.
Dylan Wood singled and scored.
Anthony Hernandez doubled and had two RBIs.
Jeremy Byers singled and scored.
Andrew Torres singled and scored, and Eric Hernandez walked and scored.
Up next: The Bulldogs will get their playoff opponent on Monday morning at 10.
