Baseball:
Bonita won its third consecutive Palomares League championship on Monday.
But Glendora made them work for it.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Bearcats got RBI singles from Cody White and Andrew Sanchez, and they scored on a throwing error to take a 3-2 lead.
Camden Farina and Gavin Reeve combined to make that stand up.
Farina might not have had his best stuff, but he’s always going to compete his way through trouble.
He went five innings and allowed two runs on six hits.
Farina issued three walks and struck out nine.
Aaron Jacobsen’s two-run double accounted for the Glendora scoring.
Reeve came in and mowed down the side in the bottom of the sixth.
But in the seventh, the Tartans had a first-and-third scenario with one out.
The Bonita lefty, though, got back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
And both were called third strikes.
The stat of the day had to be Glendora striking out 14 times, and all 10 GHS players with at least one at-bat struck out once or more.
In comparison, two Tartans’ pitchers combined to strike out one BHS batter.
Reeve got five of his six outs via strikeout, and he earned the save.
Jacobsen went 2-for-3, with a walk and the two RBIs.
Aidan Yamazaki singled and doubled.
Caleb Nguyen went 2-for-4.
Troy Estrada walked and singled, and Garrett Dykstra singled.
Dutch Burbidge walked and scored.
Matthew Martinez went four innings for GHS, and he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk.
Jordan Garrison provided three scoreless innings in relief and allowed two hits.
Garrison didn’t issue a walk and struck out one BHS batter.
Cody White went 2-for-2, was hit-by-pitch, and his RBI single in the top of the fourth turned out to be the game-winning run.
Andrew Sanchez singled, drove in a run and scored before leaving to get stitches for a cut near his knee.
Andrew Alva walked, singled and scored.
Diego Vazquez and Diego Villa had one single apiece.
Jared Brunk had a sac bunt and scored.
Colton Perez had a would-be RBI double robbed from him on a great catch by Glendora right-fielder, Caleb Nguyen.
Unlike 2023, the Bearcats won’t have to share this league crown.
