Baseball:
Marshall Fundamental will have to settle for third place in the Mission Valley League.
The Eagles needed wins over Arroyo, El Monte and Mountain View, and they had to count on some assistance from South El Monte to defeat Arroyo next week if the boys from Pasadena were to secure the MVL’s No. 2 seed in the CIF-SS playoffs.
Unfortunately, the Knights edged their visitors from Marshall, 3-2, in nine innings.
Wes Pendleton pitched his butt off, going 8 2/3 innings and he was charged with three runs on seven hits.
He walked three and fanned seven Arroyo batters.
Pendleton was pulled with a runner on third and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, because he had reached the maximum pitch count.
Ethan Sparks came in, and he coaxed a weak dribbler up the third-base line.
Sparks and third basemen Adan Castro both hesitated to go after the ball.
And by the time Castro picked it up and fired it to first, the Knights base runner had already crossed the bag.
Gabriel Rosales went 2-for-4 and scored one run.
Adam Huizar doubled and scored.
Dillon Seguin singled and drove in one run.
Fernando Gonzalez walked, singled and had two RBIs.
Joaquin Salcedo walked and scored.
Rosales went the first 5 2/3 innings for Arroyo and he was charged with two unearned runs on two hits.
Rosales walked three and he struck out six Marshall batters.
Richard Inostroz earned the win after 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Inostroz allowed two hits, didn’t walk a batter and fanned four.
Pendleton went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Trevor Lain walked, reached based on an error and he scored both Eagles runs.
Ryan Pandullo singled to account for the rest of the Marshall offense.
