Baseball:

South Hills took a big step towards another Hacienda League championship on Tuesday.

The Huskies edged their host from Walnut, 2-1, in a game that featured two 6-0 programs.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning, sophomore Matt Manzo had a clutch two-run two-out single to score Christian Gomez and Noah Malone.

Matt Moreno came on in the bottom of the sixth inning and he got the final six outs to earn the win.

Moreno didn’t allow a hit, walked one and fanned one WHS batter.

Jacob Pallan went the distance for Walnut and got the loss.

Pallan surrendered three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks.

Noah Malone singled twice and scored.

Manzo finished 2-for-3 with the two huge RBIs.

Richie Soto had an RBI double in the top of the second to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

Gomez walked, reached base on an error, and he scored two of the SHHS runs on Tuesday.

Luke Bauer started, and he allowed an unearned run on four hits and two walks over three innings.

But Bauer frustrated the Mustangs by being able to work his way out of trouble with little damage done.

Matt Velasco had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.

JJ Rodriguez and Jacob Pallan had two hits apiece for second-place Walnut.

Adam Lenero went 2-for-3 and scored.

Manny Aguilar singled and scored.

Up next: The Huskies will host the Mustangs on Thursday at 3:30.

With a win on Thursday, SHHS would, for all intents and purposes secure another league title.
