Baseball:
Bonita did what league champions do.
They hung around long enough and found a way to grind out a victory.
And such was the case for the Bearcats baseball program in its 2-1 Palomares League victory at Claremont.
They missed a couple of opportunities to move runners over, but the bottom line is ‘scoreboard.’
Camden Farina went the distance to earn the win.
Farina allowed one run on four hits.
He issued a pair of walks and registered eight strikeouts.
Farina needed 90 pitches to finish what he started.
Claremont took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the most fundamentally-sound way possible.
Ramzey Farah drew a leadoff walk, David Alcaraz bunted him over and Wyatt Green singled Farah home.
Farina, however, settled down, got stronger, and he closed out the win by retiring the final 11 batters of the game.
Farina fanned seven separate CHS batters.
Jack Grillo doubled, and Thomas Plotkin and Luke Porras singled for Claremont.
Thomas Plotkin battled throughout his complete-game effort, and he allowed two runs on four hits.
Plotkin threw 108 pitches, walked two and fanned four BHS batters.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the sixth innings, Diego Vazquez walked, and he was driven home by a Diego Villa single.
In the seventh, Colton Perez drew a leadoff walk and Vazquez drove Perez home with his RBI single.
Andrew Sanchez and Jared Brunk had doubles for the Bearcats.
Bonita has a two-game lead over Colony with five games to play.
They also hold the tiebreaker after a three-game sweep of the Titans back on March 11th, 13th and 15th.
Up next: BHS will host Claremont on Wednesday at 3:30.
