The game of baseball can provide its competitors with moments of euphoria, and it can change in an instant, and deliver a swift kick in the stones.

Los Osos was 6-0 in Baseline League play as they entered this week’s three-game set with a very talented and well-coached Damien team.

The Spartans claimed a 3-1 victory on Monday, and on Wednesday, they went on to defeat the Grizzlies, 7-2, in Rancho Cucamonga.

That meant they leapfrogged LOHS atop the league standings.

In game two, Damien led 3-2 in the top of the seventh when Nikko Paoletto hit a grand slam off LOHS sophomore, Wyatt Mohler.

Mohler was obviously disappointed, and he wanted to make it up to his boys on Friday.

Mohler seized that opportunity and made a pair of game-changing contributions in the Grizzlies 6-3 victory at Damien in nine innings.

Mohler’s two-run HR in the top of the fourth inning gave Los Osos a 3-0 lead.

And the right-hander retired each of the six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings to earn the win, and that included two strikeouts.

He even had another showdown with Paoletto, and this time, Mohler got the Damien slugger to pop out to him to end the eighth inning.

Gavin Loeb-Keene went seven strong innings for the Grizzlies, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits.

Loeb-Keene didn’t issue a walk and fanned five Damien batters.

Eli Bechtel singled and scored.

Ty Tancredi’s RBI single in the fourth got the Spartans to within 3-2.

JT Riley and JT Lovato both singled for Damien.

Andrew Carter and Paoletto scored one run apiece for the second-place Spartans.

Rudy O’Dell kept Damien in the game, going five and allowing three runs on four hits.

O’Dell walked one and he struck out five LOHS batters.

The Grizzlies got to Julian Hines for three runs on four hits over his 2 1/3 innings.

Hines didn’t walk anyone and fanned a pair of Grizzlies.

The biggest hit of the game was Roberto Topete’s two-run two-out single in the top of the ninth inning.

Topete also walked and scored.

Austin Ziello gave Mohler a third insurance run with his RBI single in the ninth.

Justin Yeutter went 2-for-5, and that included an RBI single in the top of the second to give LOHS a 1-0 lead.

Hunter Meyer had a pair of singles and he scored one run.

Jeremiah Jacobo singled and Josh Chairez scored one run for the Grizzlies.

Jake Monsen went 2-for-4 and scored.

Los Osos out-hit Damien, 11-4, on Friday.

With six games to play, LOHS holds a slim half-game lead over the Spartans.
