Charter Oak needed a win in the worst way possible.
The Chargers opened the week with an overall record of 2-9-1, and they were 0-2 in Valle Vista League games.
They sat in the VVL cellar with Northview.
COHS junior Zack Escalera decided to do something about it.
On Wednesday, Escalera tossed a three-hit shutout in the Chargers 3-0 Valle Vista League victory over Northview.
Escalera issued one walk and struck out 10 Vikings’ batters.
Fast forward 24 hours, and COHS secured a 10-9 victory at NHS to claim a two-game VVL sweep of the Vikings.
Escalera went 3-for-5, with two singles, a double and two RBIs.
His two-run double in the top of the fifth inning gave Charter Oak a 9-7 lead.
The Chargers leapfrogged Diamond Ranch and Northview in the VVL standings.
COHS currently shares the VVL’s No. 3 spot with Covina.
Escalera is now 2-3, with a 3.57 ERA.
He’s walked 12 and struck out 38 batters in 35 1/3 innings.
Escalera is batting .353, with 18 hits, 11 runs, five RBIs, two doubles and a pair of triples.
