Baseball:
The 2024 season had not been kind to the Charter Oak baseball program.
Nearing the end of the season’s second month, the Chargers headed into this week with just two wins in their first 12 games.
COHS, though, doubled their win total over the last two days.
They secured a 3-0 Valle Vista League victory over their visitors from Northview on Wednesday.
And both programs decided to move their VVL series finale up one day in the hopes of avoiding Mother Nature’s wrath.
On Thursday, Charter Oak edged Northview, 10-9, in a game that featured 19 combined runs, 27 hits, five pitchers and five errors.
COHS got to Evan Bustamante for nine runs (five earned) on 12 hits over his 4 2/3 innings.
Bustamante issued one walk and fanned a pair of COHS batters.
Camren Lobo was stuck with the loss, after allowing the seventh-inning run.
Lobo provided 2 1/3 innings of relief, and he allowed that unearned run on two hits.
Lobo walked one and struck out one.
Zack Escalera played a starring role for the second consecutive game (and day).
One day after tossing a three-hit shutout and striking out 10, Escalera went 3-for-5, including a double and two RBIs.
It was Escalera’s sac fly in the top of the seventh that turned out to be the winning run.
Julian Salmon went 3-for-5 and scored.
Moses Medrano singled twice and drove in a run.
Martin Luna walked, singled, doubled, scored twice and had one RBI.
Diego Flores went 2-for-4, with a run and one RBI.
Aedyn Martinez and Vincent Carrillo singled, scored and each drove in a run.
Kaleb Valencia had an RBI single.
Jorge Aceves singled and scored two runs.
Marcus Reese was credited with the win after going 2 2/3 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits.
Reese walked one and fanned one NHS batter.
NHS scored six runs on eight hits off Marc Lopez in three innings.
Lopez issued three walks and struck out a pair.
Seth Robles went 3-for-5, with a walk and three RBIs.
Joey Ramos singled twice, scored and had one RBI.
Nathan Arellano single, doubled and scored.
Logan Thomas went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
Noah Martinez walked, singled twice and scored a pair of runs.
Christian Mayo singled, had an RBI and scored two runs.
Isaiah Benavidez walked and scored.
Up next: Northview will battle Dana Hills on Saturday at 1 in the Ryan Lemmon Tournament.
Charter Oak faces Vista Murrieta on Thursday at 1 in the Darryl Kile Tournament.
